About Remember The Year

Remember The Year started at a family dinner, with the same argument every family has: “A gallon of gas was a quarter when I was a kid!” Was it? We went looking for the real numbers, and the stories that came with them were the best part of the night.

So we built a place to look them up and a little game to go with it. Pick a year, see what life cost, and guess your way through a new year every morning. It's free, it works on any phone or computer, and you don't need an account.

Our promise on the numbers

Every price comes from public U.S. government records: the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Census Bureau, the Energy Information Administration, the Department of Labor and the Postal Service. These are national averages, so prices in your town may have been a little different. You can see every source on our sources page.
